Dessau Middle

Summary:

Dessau Middle is a public middle school located in Austin, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 683 students. The school is part of the Pflugerville Independent School District, which is ranked 473 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Dessau Middle faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students. The school consistently underperforms the Pflugerville ISD and Texas state averages on STAAR assessments across all grade levels and subjects, with only 30.5% of 6th graders proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 54.77% for Pflugerville ISD and 54.45% for Texas. Dessau Middle's subgroups, such as Asian, African American, and White students, also perform significantly below their peers at other schools in the district and state. Additionally, the school has had higher dropout rates in recent years, ranging from 0.2% to 1.8%, and a high percentage of students (65.15% in 2022-2023) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families.

Despite its challenges, Dessau Middle's proximity to higher-performing schools within the same district, such as Bohls Middle and Park Crest Middle, presents opportunities for collaboration and learning. Additionally, nearby charter schools, such as Basis Austin and Basis Pflugerville, significantly outperform Dessau Middle and the Pflugerville ISD on academic measures, highlighting the potential for alternative educational models to drive better student achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I attended this school as a kid and even then it was not up to the standards as it should be. Your child will go down a wrong path going to this school. I have nephews who attended and dropped out because of the constant harassing and bullies. This is not a good school. When my daughter was rezoned to this school I immediately withdrew her from pfisd. And she is attending harmony charter school and thriving best decision I ever made. This school changes kids and not for the better. Dont believe me look all of it up the rating, look up stories. It's not a good place to have your child. Steer clear. Close Quote

Open Quote The problem with Dessau Middle School is the almost complete apathy of the teachers and administration. These are children from families who are largely struggling. They are single parents often working long hours or more than one job or they are uneducated parents who can't get a good job and are incapable of helping their children much. Many parents don't even speak English and thus cannot communicate with the teachers. This situation takes special people who truly care about the students and are willing to work to treat them as individuals and give them special attention but that isn't the kind of people that Dessau Middle School hires. Some of the teachers and at least one of the principals are simply mean and unhappy people; they are not caring or nice and should not be working with children, especially not needy children. There is no allowance for the fact that these children are often home alone and if they get in trouble at school, the solution is to send them home... they don't care that that only makes it worse. If you want a school where the teachers and staff work with you and think of the care of your child as a team effort, this is the wrong school! It's sad and I hope the new Principal will finally do something about it. The other schools in this district are good. Delco was awesome and Dessau Elementary was fine. Connally High School is very good. It's just that very difficult middle school piece and it's such an important phase of a child's life. I hope they figure it out. We are leaving now; this was our last year and I have at least one child who was definitely negatively impacted by his time at Dessau. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
