Psja Thomas Jefferson T-Stem Early College High School

Summary:

Psja Thomas Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Pharr, Texas, with a predominantly Hispanic student population of 539. This school stands out for its exceptional academic performance, consistently outpacing the district and state averages on STAAR End-of-Course exams, maintaining a 100% four-year graduation rate, and providing strong support for economically disadvantaged and English Language Learner students.

Psja Thomas Jefferson T-STEM's academic achievements are particularly noteworthy, with significantly higher proficiency rates compared to the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) and the state of Texas in key subjects like Algebra I, English I and II Reading, and U.S. History. The school's Gifted and Talented program is also highly ranked, placing 48th out of 1,182 Texas high schools. These strong academic outcomes are even more impressive given that 96.66% of the school's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage.

While Psja Thomas Jefferson T-STEM consistently outperforms its nearby counterparts within the PSJA ISD, such as Psja North Early College High School and Psja Southwest Early College High School, the school's focus on providing a rigorous STEM-based curriculum and strong support for its diverse student population appears to be a key driver of its success. The school's investment in resources, with a steady increase in per-student spending, and its relatively low student-teacher ratio may also contribute to its outstanding academic achievements.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Dual enrollment can be very harmful to a student who might want to enter a medical school (MD degree). If a student who takes a class at a college under dual enrollment is not ready and gets a B or below, this grade will follow them for life. AMCAS does not allow "retakes" or "amnesty". The grades earned under dual-enrollment are PERMANENT. High schools should offer AP classes instead of dual-enrollment. AP classes taken in high school do not put a student at risk like dual-enrollment does. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
