Red Oak High School

Summary:

Red Oak High School is a public high school located in Red Oak, Texas, serving grades 8-12 with a total enrollment of 2,160 students, and is part of the Lancaster Independent School District, which is ranked 461 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Red Oak High School stands out for its diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 21.06% White, 37.55% African American, 36.34% Hispanic, 1.02% Asian, and 3.66% two or more races. This diversity is higher than nearby schools, which tend to have a higher concentration of either African American or Hispanic students. However, the school has shown a decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from a 4-star rating in 2015-2016 to a 2-star rating in the most recent years. Despite this, Red Oak High School still performs better than some of the nearby schools, particularly in subject areas like U.S. History and English II Reading. The school also maintains a relatively high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 89.1% to 96.6% over the past few years, which is higher than the graduation rates of some nearby schools, such as Desoto High School, which had an 88.0% four-year graduation rate in 2022-2023.

One of the key challenges facing Red Oak High School is the high percentage of students from low-income families, with 54.54% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. This is higher than the nearby schools, which have a lower percentage of students from low-income backgrounds. This socioeconomic factor may contribute to the school's declining performance and the noticeable disparities in academic achievement among different racial groups. Addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and support for students from low-income families could help Red Oak High School improve its overall outcomes and better serve its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Regrettably, I have to agree with the parent who posted in 2010. I just graduated from Red Oak and have seen firsthand the rampant bullying of certain students. Disciplinary problems have increased and just like the bullying issue, school administrators aren't doing enough to get the situation under control. Punishments are selectively handed out. I've witnessed popular students receive a 'slap on the wrist' for conduct violations while a less popular 'outcast' was suspended for the same offense. I'm lucky enough to have parents who wanted me to be college-ready by graduation, so they paid for me to take additional courses after school. There are a few good teachers here, so I gave the school a two star rating instead of one, but academics are below average. I'm glad I don't have to go to this school anymore. Close Quote

Open Quote As a student of Red Oak High School I know what goes on there every day. I have been in the Red Oak School district for 13 years and would not want to go anywhere else. The teachers and administration truly care about the students and always have their best interest in mind. They will work with students as long as the student needs to to be successful. This year we have a brand new building and it is amazing. It is another example of the administration having the student's best interest in mind. Along with the new building, many new program's have been established at our high school including show choir and the Rachel's Challenge program. As far as the student body goes everyone tends to get along very well. There is very little if any bullying. Being high school there are always some problems, but compared to other schools ours are minor. All of our extra-curricular activities excel. From sports teams to Academic UIL to choir and band, all of ROHS's activities are very successful. I highly recommend Red Oak High School to anybody looking for a new school. We would love to have you! Close Quote

Open Quote Parents, avoid this school at all costs. The quality of education has deteriorated in recent years and continues to go downhill. Parent/teacher communication is poor. The curriculum is weak and needs to be more rigorous. This year, my daughter has was bullied by a particular 'clique' of girls. She maintained her composure in the face of frequent name-calling and insults, only to come home and cry her eyes out. She shouldn't have to go through this just to get an education. I ended up transferring her to another school in the area. I would not recommend this school to any parent looking for a 'good' high school. It is just awful. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
