Summary:

C E King High School is a public high school in Houston, Texas, serving 3,473 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Sheldon Independent School District, which is ranked 778 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating.

Despite serving a predominantly Hispanic (65.91%) and African American (28.94%) student population, C E King High School has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Texas high schools over the past decade, maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's STAAR EOC test scores are significantly below state and district averages across all subject areas, with proficiency rates ranging from 27.17% in Algebra I to 61.12% in U.S. History, compared to state averages of 44.73% and 69.1%, respectively. Additionally, the school's four-year graduation rate has declined from 92.9% in 2019-2020 to 89.7% in 2022-2023, while its dropout rate has increased from 1.0% in 2018-2019 to 2.6% in 2020-2021.

When compared to nearby schools, such as the Galena Park Independent School District (ISD) Career & Technical ECHS, which has significantly higher STAAR EOC proficiency rates, a 98.9% four-year graduation rate, and a 0.0% dropout rate, C E King High School's performance lags behind both the state and district averages, particularly for its African American, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged student populations. This suggests that addressing the school's challenges will be crucial for improving educational outcomes and opportunities for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Has the potential to be a great school due to it's AP teachers, but thanks to the curriculum the school board imposes upon the students, I feel like we're being held back from everything that we could possibly learn as students. Close Quote

Open Quote C.E king is a disgusting school. It used to be good but then it went straight downhill. The students are rude and they've basically driven out all the outstanding teachers. It's a joke here. If you have a chance to avoid this school do it. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers there do not want to teach the children and honestly there are a lot of teachers that can hardly speak proper enough to even teach the child. They are there for a paycheck only, I asked one of the teachers what he was there for and he said if the children had a question then he could answer it. SO I guess he gets paid for supervising the class. Come on, this is what is wrong with our world today, it is schools like this not teaching our children, not wanting to take the time to teach the children, not getting them ready to go into the world. I think maybe they should have higher standards when hiring these teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
