Tarkington High School

Summary:

Tarkington High School is a public high school located in Cleveland, Texas, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 513. The school is part of the Cleveland Independent School District, which is ranked 722 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Tarkington High School has maintained a strong four-year graduation rate, ranging from 91.5% to 94.9%, which is higher than the state average and compares favorably to nearby schools like Cleveland High School and Liberty High School. However, the school's performance on STAAR EOC exams is mixed, with proficiency rates in Algebra I significantly lower than the state and district averages. Tarkington High School also struggles with the performance of its White student population, who make up the majority of the student body.

Tarkington High School's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 470 out of 1,777 Texas high schools in 2016-2017 to 1,336 out of 1,987 in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school is not keeping pace with improvements in other Texas high schools. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, which may contribute to its academic challenges. Addressing these areas of concern, while also supporting the school's socioeconomically disadvantaged students, will be crucial for Tarkington High School to improve its overall performance and ranking among Texas high schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Little focus and attention is directed towards education. Minorities are bullied by administrators and staff until they leave the area or the student drops out. The same discrimination occurs for students who do not participate in extra-curricular activities. The handbook only applies to students that are not related to the staff. Bullying is frequently ignored by staff and administrators. Tarkington is a great place to live if you don't have school-aged children. Many parents choose to home-school, which is highly recommended. Otherwise, I would look elsewhere to live! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
