Orchard Hills School

Summary:

Orchard Hills School is an elementary school located in Santaquin, Utah, serving grades PK-6 with a total enrollment of 572 students. While the school is part of the Nebo School District, which is ranked 55 out of 98 districts in Utah, Orchard Hills School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Utah elementary schools over the past several years, with a ranking between 304 and 420 out of 509-572 schools.

Orchard Hills School faces several challenges that set it apart from the nearby schools in the Nebo District. The school's test scores consistently underperform compared to the district and state averages, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science falling below the state levels. Additionally, Orchard Hills School has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (28.67%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 14.63% to 59.52%. The school also has a higher student-teacher ratio (24.8) than the nearby schools, which range from 20.6 to 27.5.

The data suggests that Orchard Hills School may be facing unique challenges or factors that are impacting its performance. The school's declining statewide ranking over the past several years indicates that it is struggling to keep pace with other elementary schools in the state. While the higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Orchard Hills School could be a contributing factor to the lower test scores, the school may benefit from targeted interventions and support to address these areas of concern and improve student outcomes.

Open Quote The principal and some of the teachers (even one who is allegedly trained in special education for skills class) have very little awareness of how to handle autistic children who are in a general education setting. In their defense, they very quickly moved my child out of the school once I became actively involved in making sure he got the education he needed. They are very well equipped with children who have minor emotional problems, however, and can still remain in the general education setting. My child had a bully and the principal and ALL the teachers got together to form a proactive plan to keep both children separated. I have another child in the school who is shy and emotionally sensitive. His teacher was excellent this year, and found ways to build his self esteem. Because of this, his grades were stellar! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
