Liberty High

Summary:

Liberty High is a public high school located in Bedford, Virginia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 726 students. The school is part of the Bedford County Public Schools district, which is ranked 43 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Liberty High has a predominantly white student population, with 79.06% of students identifying as white, which is higher than nearby schools like Jefferson Forest High (77.31%) and significantly higher than E.C. Glass High (39.62%) and Heritage High (27.96%). However, Liberty High's academic performance has fluctuated, with a statewide ranking ranging from 189th out of 327 Virginia high schools in 2020-2021 to 264th out of 329 in 2023-2024, and a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. This is lower than the consistent high rankings and better ratings of nearby schools like James River High.

Liberty High's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic students performing relatively well but African American students and students with low socioeconomic status performing significantly worse. Additionally, the school has faced declining resources, with a decrease in per-student spending from $8,499 in 2019-2020 to $6,181 in 2020-2021, and an increase in student-teacher ratio from 11.3 in 2021-2022 to 12.8 in 2020-2021, which is higher than nearby schools. To address these challenges, Liberty High may need to implement targeted interventions, focus on equity and inclusion, and explore strategies used by higher-performing nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Liberty is a school of many opportunities! We have a variety of sports available to play and clubs to join. We also employ dual enrollment with Bedford Science and Technology Center and Central Virginia Community College. Several of our students also attend Governor's School and many have gone onto very good colleges. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
