Larrymore Elementary

Summary:

Larrymore Elementary is a public elementary school in Norfolk, Virginia, serving 592 students in grades PK-5. The school stands out for its diverse student population, strong academic performance, and unique challenges faced by its high-poverty student body.

Larrymore Elementary has a more racially diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of African American (44.59%) and Hispanic (21.45%) students. The school consistently outperforms the Norfolk City Public Schools district and the state of Virginia in standardized test scores, particularly in English Reading. Larrymore also ranks highly for certain student subgroups, including African American, Hispanic, and military-connected students. However, the school's statewide ranking has declined in recent years, suggesting it is not keeping pace with overall academic improvements across Virginia.

Despite the school's strong performance, Larrymore Elementary faces significant socioeconomic challenges, with a very high percentage of students (95.78% to 99.46%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch. While Larrymore outperforms many other high-poverty schools in the district, it lags behind the nearby Tarrallton Elementary in both math and reading proficiency. These insights highlight the unique strengths and challenges of Larrymore Elementary, a school that is working to provide a quality education to its diverse and economically disadvantaged student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child who has ADHD attends this school currently (2012) and the experience at this school for both of my children as well as my husband and I has been nothing short of miraculous! Prior to attending this school, we experienced two Norfolk private schools and while those schools were not bad in terms of education, they were expensive and a little "snooty" as well. Larrymore's staff from Kindergarten which includes Ms. Morgan, Ms. Williams, Ms. Leafe, and Ms. Tompanis along with all the special ed staff in between has been incredible. Each teacher, assistant teacher, and administrative staff person that I have had dealings with has been supportive, engaged, and completely committed to ensure the best education. My son has had a total transformation coming to this school. He went from limited reading even after tutoring and private schooling to becoming a fluent reader. I have always felt in the 4 years of attendance here, that my kids and us as parents were treated with respect, appreciation and encouragement. I am confident that my kids have a solid educational foundation largely due to the commitment of Larrymore staff. This school is a hidden "gem" of Norfolk. Close Quote

Open Quote My problem with this school is that they don't offer an afterschool tutoring or homework program. Although NATO is located in Norfolk with children that have been relocated more often than most and need more assistance than children that seemingly have had a more stable lifestyle, they don't offer any additional help with school work assignments. Children with ADHD and other learning disabilities really need this help. I live in a tiny town in Georgia and the school system here offers all sorts of programs to help those children. Not every parent has the skills needed to help their children, so who other than educated adults that are skilled enough to help can they depend on? For a fee of five dollars a week these kids here get a snack, drink and help with homework for 2 hours three times a week. What about No Child Left Behind? I just can't believe this a city the size of Norfolk would allow this! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
