Summary:

Kiptopeke Elementary is a public elementary school located in Cape Charles, Virginia, serving grades PK-6 with a total enrollment of 351 students. The school is part of the Northampton County Public Schools district, which is ranked 124 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kiptopeke Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Virginia elementary schools, with a ranking between 838 and 1023 out of 1,100-1,114 schools over the past several years. The school has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating below-average performance compared to other Virginia elementary schools. While the school performs better for Hispanic students, ranking in the top 50% of Virginia elementary schools, it struggles with White and African American students, ranking in the bottom 25-50%.

Kiptopeke Elementary's proficiency rates in SOL (Standards of Learning) assessments for Mathematics, Science, and English Reading are consistently lower than the state and district averages. The school has a very high percentage of students (99.72% in 2022-2023) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite the school's persistent underperformance, the relatively low student-teacher ratio and increased per-student spending suggest that the school has access to resources that could potentially be leveraged to improve academic outcomes through targeted interventions and support programs.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Mrs. Parker is wonderful. Unfortunately she is not the principal. She is the assistant and she has less power than she has ever had before. The new principal is a tyrant who doesn't know what she is doing. I hear she has never even been a teacher. How can you be in charge of teachers if you never taught? I had to get my kids out of there. I feel bad for families who have no choice. This principal is great for business at the local private schools. They should pay her a finders fee for running parents off! Close Quote

Open Quote I came to virginia for a temporaily stay because of an unexpected illness of my mother, and I put my kids in schools here. Kiptopeke was the school I choose and I am very glad I did. The school is Great! The ladies in the office are great and I got a chance to meet Mrs. Parker, the Principal. She is such a nice woman, very kind and caring and such a pleasure to be around. I also am so pleased with my daughter's teachers. She has two teachers and they both are wonderful. I appreciated how everyone welcomed us to Kiptopeke Elem. and made us feel. It was almost like we have been here our entire life. I would not change a thing and i couldn't be blessed anymore then I am now. I feel great that my child loves her school, her teacher and everything at kiptopeke. She went from a school that was half day to a school that is full day. This was a huge change and she fit in perfect and is doing wonderful. That was all i was nervous about was the whole day situation and it worked out great. Her teacher lets me know how good shes doing and it's awesome how these people at Kiptopeke really are. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
