Westside Elementary

Summary:

Westside Elementary is a public elementary school in Roanoke, Virginia, serving around 640 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Roanoke City Public Schools district, which is ranked 119 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Westside Elementary faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. The school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Virginia, with only 32.1% of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in SOL English Reading, compared to 46.55% for the Roanoke City Public Schools district and 66.88% for the state of Virginia. Westside Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 98.44% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the district and state averages. Despite a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12.5 students per teacher, the school's academic performance remains the lowest among the nearby schools analyzed, including Virginia Heights Elementary, Preston Park Elementary, and Fairview Elementary.

The racial makeup of Westside Elementary is significantly different from the nearby schools, with a much higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students, suggesting that the school may be serving a more disadvantaged population. Additionally, Westside Elementary has a relatively high per-student spending of $9,214, which is higher than the spending at some of the nearby schools, but these resources do not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes. This indicates that the school may require more targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of its student population and improve educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Westside is a caring school that looks at for the well-being and best interest of the students. The provide opportunities for the students to be a part of different organizations such as there step team, debate team, or chorus. The school also sponsors events such as the Coat Giveaway, Eagle Fest Celebration, and literacy nights for parents and students. My child talks about the different forms of technology that he uses at school including the SmartBoard and laptop. My son is also looking forward to the annual fifth grade trip to Williamsburg that the school provides for a very reasonable price. The school has not received good reviews in the past, but I have been very pleased with Westside since Mr. Williams, the principal, came to the school. The school is doing better academically and my child enjoys going to school each day. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
