William Perry Elementary

Summary:

William Perry Elementary is a public elementary school located in Waynesboro, Virginia, serving 446 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Waynesboro City Public Schools district, which is ranked 117 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

William Perry Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Virginia elementary schools, with academic performance significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in mathematics and reading were 10-20 percentage points lower than the state and district averages. The school's performance has also declined over the past few years, with proficiency rates dropping in several subject areas. This underperformance is particularly pronounced among the school's African American, Hispanic, and low-income students, who perform well below their peers at nearby schools like Westwood Hills Elementary and Berkeley Glenn Elementary, which also serve high percentages of low-income students.

The significant academic achievement gap between William Perry Elementary and higher-performing schools in the Albemarle County Public Schools district, such as Brownsville Elementary and Crozet Elementary, highlights the challenges faced by high-poverty schools, even within the same broader educational system. The school's high percentage of low-income students, over 85% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, is likely a contributing factor to its overall academic underperformance, suggesting the need for targeted investments and support to address the unique needs of students and their families.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My husband and I are extremely pleased with William Perry Elementary School! We started at Westwood Elementary and being that our daughter has special needs that were not able to be addressed at Westwood we transitioned her to WP. First impressions were remarkable! I could go on but let me just say that our daughter is progressing very well. The staff of WP are highly qualified and proffessional tending to each child's needs on an individual basis and with utmost care(TLC)! Our daughter is in her third year at WP and I can honestly say I have not met a single staff member that I would not entrust my daughter's care to. WP is also very parent friendly. There has not been a time that my questions or input has not been thoroughly addressed and welcomed. My husband and I had planned to move to the County but have decided to stay in our current home here in Waynesboro as long as our daughter can attend WP. Hat's off to the staff of WP!!! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
