Jenkins Junior/Senior High

Summary:

Jenkins Junior/Senior High is a public school serving grades 7-12 in Chewelah, Washington, with a total enrollment of 314 students. While the school has maintained relatively high graduation rates, it faces several challenges, including lower-than-average test scores and a declining statewide ranking.

Compared to the state average, Jenkins has a significantly higher percentage of white students and a lower percentage of Hispanic and Asian students. The school's academic performance is also below the state average, with only 48.73% of students proficient in English Language Arts and 18.18% proficient in Math. However, Jenkins performs better for female students and low-socioeconomic status students compared to male students and white students. Nearby schools, such as Colville Senior High School, have higher proficiency rates and graduation rates than Jenkins.

Despite a significant increase in per-student spending, from $12,066 in 2019-2020 to $18,003 in 2021-2022, Jenkins' academic performance has not improved. This suggests the school may need to re-evaluate how it allocates its resources to address the challenges it faces, such as the high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and the declining statewide ranking. The school is part of the Chewelah School District, which is ranked 148 out of 247 districts in Washington and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Nice, small town school. I graduated there and 20 years later my sons are graduating from there. Good teachers who care about your children. They could use a little more school spirit, but it takes active parents to help with that. Ok sports program, it keep the kids active and out of small town trouble. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
