Westgate Elementary

Summary:

Westgate Elementary is a public elementary school in Edmonds, Washington, serving 441 students in grades 1-6. It stands out as a strong-performing school within the Edmonds School District, which is ranked 76 out of 247 districts in the state.

One key differentiator is Westgate's diverse student population, with a higher percentage of non-white students compared to nearby schools like Seaview Elementary and Edmonds Elementary. Academically, Westgate consistently outperforms state and district averages in both English Language Arts and Math proficiency, particularly in 3rd and 5th grade. The school has maintained a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger and ranks in the top third of Washington elementary schools.

While Westgate faces some challenges compared to higher-performing nearby schools like Madrona K-8 and Edmonds Elementary, its strengths make it an attractive option for families in the Edmonds area. The school serves a more economically diverse population, with a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, and has seen a significant increase in per-student spending, which may have contributed to its strong academic performance and low student-teacher ratio.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have little to compare - one other school recently as my kids are all grown up but I enrolled a child who is living with my mother (her mother too) and found Westgate to be one of the most caring, loving and responsive schools I have been involved with ever. The school secretary remembers all the kids names, remembers faces, greets people (like me) The Peace Garden is impressive, the playground, field trips and KINDNESS seems to be one of the most important things.

Our child loved her class and teacher Mrs Allemeier immediately and felt accepted. She can't wait to begin again this year. Carolynne Harris Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
