Eastlake High School

Summary:

Eastlake High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Sammamish, Washington, part of the highly-ranked Lake Washington School District. With a student population of 2,349, Eastlake consistently ranks among the top high schools in the state, placing 4th out of 442 schools in 2022-2023 and 7th out of 437 schools in 2023-2024, with a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Eastlake High School's exceptional academic performance is evident across key metrics. The school maintains a 97.9% 4-year graduation rate, significantly higher than the state average, and a low dropout rate ranging from 0.3% to 3.4% over the past 5 years. Students at Eastlake consistently outperform their peers at the district and state levels in core subjects like English Language Arts, Math, and Science. For example, in 2023-2024, 89.03% of 10th-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 66.2% statewide. Eastlake's strong performance extends to diverse student subgroups, including female students, male students, Asian students, Hispanic students, and students with special needs.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Skyline High School and schools in the Bellevue School District, Eastlake High School's academic outcomes are generally stronger. The school's relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 3.48% to 6.34% over the past 3 years, suggests a relatively affluent student population. As the school's racial demographics continue to evolve, with a decrease in white students and an increase in Asian students, it will be important to monitor the impact on Eastlake's programs and support systems to ensure all students have the resources they need to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote With 2 kids having attended EHS, our overall experience has been extremely negative. The EHS staff have not been effective, especially VP Todd Apple (completely worthless with absolutely terrible judgement), and Laura Dean, the worst teacher our family has ever come across...she has frequently discriminated against a special needs student and fosters a highly negative environment. Her classroom is often described as "prison, with an inflexible, closed-minded dictator who does not seem to care about her students. Their athletic
trainer, Maria, is highly vindictive and petty when anyone questions her actions. She is overly emotional and is more concerned with CYA activities rather than doing what is best for the student-athletes. She is very controlling with awful judgment. She has inexplicably "ruled" against the treatment recommendations of highly respected, well-educated and much more experienced doctors, which seems absurd to me.

Overall, a school with major leadership problems. A staff overhaul is much-needed and long overdue. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
