Sky Valley Education Center

Summary:

Sky Valley Education Center is an alternative public school located in Monroe, Washington, serving grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 833 students and is part of the Monroe School District.

Sky Valley Education Center has a significantly higher percentage of white students (79.95%) compared to the state average (52.63%) and the Monroe School District (51.49%), with lower percentages of minority students. The school's four-year graduation rates have fluctuated, ranging from a high of 87.1% in 2018-2019 to a low of 68.9% in 2020-2021, though its most recent rate of 75.8% in 2022-2023 is still higher than the state average of 52.63%. However, Sky Valley Education Center has experienced higher dropout rates compared to the state and district averages, ranging from 6.4% in 2018-2019 to 14.5% in 2022-2023. The school's test scores in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are generally lower than the state and district averages, with some exceptions, and the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch has steadily increased from 9.96% in 2020-2021 to 19.93% in 2022-2023.

When compared to nearby alternative schools, such as Out of District Special Educational and Special Services, Sky Valley Education Center has a higher percentage of white students and lower percentages of minority students. However, these nearby schools tend to have higher percentages of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a more economically disadvantaged student population. The increased spending per student and the rising percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Sky Valley Education Center suggest that the school is making efforts to address the needs of its student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote People at Sky Valley are really nice and everyone has fun being around each other. The rules aren't terribly strict and neither are the punishments (I don't even think we have any) and the classes are both fun and very educational at the same time, so we learn a lot. There's a lot of free will going on - you decide the classes you take, your schedule, and you can go about freely if you want. There's no bullying or high social standards, because there's a big mixed environment of children and teens and parents. Great school, it's kind of sad I have to leave it in a few years. Open Quote Test scores are low only because most families opt out of the state testing. This is an alternative school that provides a lot of alternative methods of learning, from online learning, Montessori, Parent Partnership program, Environmental education, etc. Many parents drive a half hour or more to bring their kids to these programs for part of the week, and homeschool their children the other part of the week. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
