Voyager Middle School

Summary:

Voyager Middle School is a public middle school located in Everett, Washington, serving 947 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Mukilteo School District, which is ranked 117 out of 247 school districts in the state.

Despite its relatively high spending per student of $18,920, Voyager Middle School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Washington middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grades and subjects. The school's diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (38.23%) and African American (11.3%) students, also faces notable achievement gaps, with Asian and African American students performing better than their Hispanic and White counterparts. The high percentage of students (over 70%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch suggests that socioeconomic challenges may be a contributing factor to the school's academic struggles.

When compared to nearby schools in the Mukilteo School District and other districts, such as Olympic View Middle School and Harbour Pointe Middle School, Voyager Middle School consistently underperforms, with lower standardized test scores and a less affluent student population. This suggests that the school may need to re-evaluate its educational strategies, resource allocation, and support systems to improve student outcomes and close the achievement gaps.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have two kids at Voyager right now, 6th and 8th grade. I can't say enough good things about this school. My kids have been involved in several sports and after school clubs. There is something for everyone. I really thankful that there isn't a lot of homework so we can do other activities after school rather than just homework. The teachers care. The counselors are amazingly kind. I would suggest meeting the teacher and staff and getting involved. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughters gym locker was btroken into while gym class was going on. Her band sweatshirt was stolen. The school did nothing and allowed my daughter to go all day without a coat of some kind on a 35 degree day. The school insists on providing the locks for the lockers. Yet they do nothing to secure the locker rooms. Close Quote

Open Quote My son is in 6th grade, loves the school and actually comes home telling me about his day and all he has learned. I keep an open communication with his teacher via e-mail and always get a same day answer. I was a bit scared at the beginning to send him to this school since to my understanding it is not one of the best in the school district, but now I see him happy enjoying school and learning. I am a proud parent of an honor student! Close Quote

Open Quote My student had an opposite experience to the reviewer above. In fact, I am wondering if she is even speaking of the same school, since at Voyager, students do not even have 6 classes per day (they only have 4).

We were originally planning to send our daughter to Harbour Pointe, but am glad we did not- Voyager seems to use a more hands-on, thinking approach to learning. Also, the teachers are outstanding here!
Harbour Pointe seems to be more old-school (according to other parents).

My daughter loved the team teaching environment here, and especially enjoyed her band class. There were several typical "middle school issues" (conflicts with other girls) but I found these were squashed quickly and the counselor called immediately to let me know.

Her teachers have been excellent and quite caring, and the work-load seems appropriate for students her age, if not more challenging than that given to friend's children at other schools.

It seems that only parent whose students get into trouble are the ones whom find fault with how things are handled...which is why I decided to give my two cents.

I would definitely recommend this school, as well as this district for its excellent schools and teachers. Close Quote

Open Quote So far my Daughter has had one teacher that made her cry in front of class than made fun of her. this same teacher in class stated she hated children. after five months of being bullied by another classmate ( we tried everything to stop it) the vice-principal told my daughter (who has never ever been in trouble at school and receives high honors, that she must have done somthing to cause this to happen. we are talking name calling I cannot repeat here, tripping and hitting, racial slurs and death threats. When she tried to tell a teacher, she was told because the teacher had not witnessed it it must not have happened. Three of her teachers told me they were just too busy to call me to let me know if my daughter was struggling in class. These same teachers suggested I go to the schools website to check on my daughters homework and grades yet out of 6 classes only two classes are available the other teacher does not use the program and another has not updated since October 2009. Last year because my daughter loves to draw and sometimes doodles I was told by the teacher and counsellor that she must be ADHD and needed meds. This same Counsellor promised to keep tabs on my daughter to see how she was doing and never talked to her again. She has been Sexually harrassed by the boys and one teacher espeacially just ignores it, and it is not just my daughter girls are grabbed in the chest, crotch, rear and pretty much talked to like a piece of meat and yet the tachers seem to over-look it. These kids are still just kids 11 and 12. My daughter has gone from loving school and her teachers in elementary school to dreading school. In three months she was given twelve assignments from six classes, we are talking 12 assignments total not just homework but classwork too. what do they do all day? not learning, she has had maybe 3 history assignments all year and the spelling teacher decided not to do spelling tests every week because the kids were doing so poorly. um isn't that the idea to teach these things. am getting this out, WE were told this year there was no money for 7th grade sports teams that they would just play in the gym. That was fine we can understand not having any money in these times, but if that is true than why did both girl and boys play in the gym but the boys had a coach and the girls had an 7th grade boy who hogged the ball the whole time so he could flirt. where is the balance? About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
