Cascadia High School

Summary:

Cascadia High School is a small public high school serving grades 8-12 in Tumwater, Washington, part of the Tumwater School District. Despite its small size of 109 students, the school has consistently underperformed academically compared to other high schools in the state.

Cascadia High School ranks in the bottom 20% of high schools in Washington, with very low academic performance and graduation rates. Only 33.33% of Cascadia students were proficient in English Language Arts in 2023-2024, compared to 71.17% for the district and 66.2% for the state. The school's four-year graduation rate has ranged from just 41.4% to 67.9% over the past 5 years, significantly lower than the 95.0% and 93.8% rates at nearby Tumwater High School and A.G. West Black Hills High School. Cascadia also has high dropout rates, ranging from 13.6% to 24.5%.

While Cascadia High School has a more racially diverse student population compared to nearby high schools, this diversity does not translate into academic success. The school serves a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 58.72% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023, significantly higher than the 31.05% and 32.53% at Tumwater High School and A.G. West Black Hills High School, respectively. Cascadia's per-student spending has also been lower than these nearby schools. Overall, the data suggests Cascadia High School faces significant challenges in improving student outcomes and supporting its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
