Myra Terwilliger Elementary School

Summary:

Myra Terwilliger Elementary School is a public elementary school in Gainesville, Florida, serving 586 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Alachua District, which is ranked 43 out of 68 districts in Florida and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Myra Terwilliger Elementary stands out for several key factors. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (51.88%) compared to nearby schools like William S. Talbot Elementary (27.59%) and Meadowbrook Elementary (18.23%). The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 44.4% to 52.2% over the past few years, much higher than the 17.5% to 27.9% seen at nearby schools. Academically, Myra Terwilliger's test scores are consistently 10-20 percentage points below the district and state averages in English Language Arts and Math.

Despite higher spending per student at Myra Terwilliger, ranging from $10,911 to $13,250 over the past few years, the school's performance remains significantly lower than nearby schools, which spend $8,962 to $11,387 per student. This suggests that simply increasing funding may not be enough to address the school's challenges, which likely stem from a combination of socioeconomic factors, transportation issues, and other community-based concerns. Addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism and racial disparities could be key steps in improving educational outcomes at Myra Terwilliger Elementary.

Open Quote My grandchild wants to go to school every day. She likes her teacher and is trying to make friends. I still have to "make" her do her homework but that is not because she is in Terwilliger. I had to do that at her last school(J.J. Finley) also. The staff is friendly and I "love" that she gets free breakfast and lunch. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
