Porterdale Elementary School

Summary:

Porterdale Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Covington, Georgia, with 417 students. The school is part of the Newton County School District, which is ranked 157 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Porterdale Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools, maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past 10 years, indicating it is performing well below average. The school lags behind the Newton County and Georgia averages in proficiency rates on the Milestones Assessments across grade levels and subject areas, with only 12% of 3rd graders proficient in ELA compared to 23.6% in the district and 38.4% statewide. Porterdale also has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 77.7% to 84.89%, significantly higher than surrounding schools.

While Porterdale Elementary spends between $11,082 and $12,371 per student, higher than some nearby schools, this additional funding does not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes. In contrast, the Newton County Theme School at Ficquett stands out as a high-performing outlier, with proficiency rates of 60.7% in 3rd grade ELA and math, far exceeding the district and state averages. This suggests that factors beyond just resource allocation, such as targeted interventions and support services focused on addressing the needs of economically disadvantaged students, may be crucial in improving Porterdale Elementary's performance.

Open Quote This school is very unorganized. The school advertised picture day with your child favorite toy. Unfortunately, I received pictures but my daughter picture wasn't in it. The teacher claim she wasn't aware. My daughter never takes toys to school so why would you assume it was something else when you sent home the papers. I also took my daughter her lunch box to school around 8:00 am because she forgot it and they assumed me she would get it. She got her lunch box after lunch was over. Last but not least my daughter got hurt at school and it wasn't reported to me. I had to contact the school after my daughter told me about the incident. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
