Creswell Elementary

Summary:

Creswell Elementary is a public elementary school in Creswell, North Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 119 students. The school is part of the Washington County Schools district, which is ranked 178 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Creswell Elementary faces several challenges, including significantly lower academic performance compared to state and district averages, with proficiency rates in Math and Reading ranging from 17.4% to 69.2% for 3rd-5th graders, compared to state averages of 48.7% to 62.7% in Math and 48.7% to 52.8% in Reading. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students (over 97%) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Creswell Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, with a 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Interestingly, while Creswell Elementary spends significantly more per student ($17,208 in 2018-2019) compared to the nearby Pines Elementary ($12,588 in 2018-2019), its academic performance is generally lower. This suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as school leadership, teacher quality, and instructional practices, may be contributing to the school's underperformance. Additionally, the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.1 to 12 students per teacher, suggests that class size alone may not be the primary driver of the school's academic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Creswell Elementary is by far one of the worst schools in the district. Teachers are not supported, staff in the main office (including the principal) is by far LARGELY uneducated (at least they sound this way when you speak with them). Teachers are made to feel as though they are in the depths of despair, no help whatsoever when dealing with children with very obvious behavioral issues. DO NOT teach at Creswell, will be the worst decision of your life. DO NOT send your students/children to Creswell, will not be able to get the education they deserve due to all the children there who do not want to learn and make learning improbable for any child who would like to learn. If I could give zero stars, I would.
This elementary needs a total re-do, starting with the principal and ending with the undisciplined and unruly children. Only know of one teacher at this school who is stellar and amazing. Can't wait for this teacher to get out of from Creswell and on to a better school to be appreciated for all they do. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
