South Harrison Elementary School

Summary:

South Harrison Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in Harrisonville, New Jersey, with 333 students. The school is part of the South Harrison Township School District, which is ranked 345 out of 613 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, South Harrison Elementary School generally performs in the middle range compared to other New Jersey elementary schools, with test scores on par with or slightly above the state average in English Language Arts and Mathematics. However, the school's performance lags behind some higher-performing nearby schools, such as Harrison Township Elementary School and Samuel Mickle School. The school's Special Education students perform particularly well, ranking in the top 12% of New Jersey elementary schools in this category.

One area of concern is the school's significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 3.3% in 2021-2022 to 16.6% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average. The school may need to focus on addressing this issue, as well as enhancing the academic outcomes of its White and Male student subgroups, which currently perform in the lower half of New Jersey elementary schools. By learning from the practices of higher-performing nearby schools and targeting specific areas of concern, South Harrison Elementary School may be able to drive further improvements in student learning and achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is my children's first year attending South Harrison and the staff and parents are so close, it's amazing to see your children grow in every aspect with a whole community! I have never been in a district that welcomes and knows every students name, including parents within less than a year! And not for bad reasons lol. The principal even knows every student by name. This school teaches so much more than academics and I am so pleased with everyone in the district! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
