Swatara Middle School

Summary:

Swatara Middle School is a public middle school located in Steelton, Pennsylvania, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 539 students. It is part of the Central Dauphin School District, which is ranked 372 out of 610 school districts in Pennsylvania and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Swatara Middle School consistently performs below the state and district averages on PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) tests in Math, Science, and English Language Arts across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 14.6% of Swatara students were proficient or better in PSSA Math, compared to 35.6% in the Central Dauphin School District and 40.4% statewide. The school also struggles to serve certain student subgroups effectively, ranking in the bottom 25% of Pennsylvania middle schools for Asian, White, and Disabled student performance. However, the school performs better for African American and English Language Learner students, ranking in the top 50% of Pennsylvania middle schools for these subgroups. Additionally, Swatara Middle School has seen a steady increase in its dropout rate, rising from 0.0% in 2020-2021 to 1.6% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average.

When comparing Swatara Middle School to other nearby middle schools in the Central Dauphin School District and surrounding districts, it becomes clear that Swatara is an outlier in terms of academic performance. For example, Central Dauphin Middle School and Crossroads Middle School, which are both within a 5-mile radius, significantly outperform Swatara on PSSA tests, with proficiency rates that are 20-30 percentage points higher. Despite the relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio at Swatara Middle School, these resources do not seem to translate into improved academic outcomes, suggesting that the school may need to re-evaluate how it allocates its resources.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote While there are many challenges involved with sending my children to Swatara, the dedication and professionalism of the teachers is not one of them. The major impediment to quality education at this school is the discipline, or lack there of, of a faction of the student population. My children have reported abhorrent behavior from students in their classes with no perceivable consequence. I have been involved at Swatara for a number of years and have grown to know many of the teachers personally. The number one complaint that I hear from these teachers is the total disrespect that they receive from some students and the lack of consequences associated with these behaviors. In my opinion this is an outstanding staff that would excel at another school, but are behind the 8 ball here. I have considered alternative schools for my kids, particularly 1, but have not liked my choices. Close Quote

Open Quote The Principal(Mr. Valentin)and Assistant Principal(Mr. Termin) just do not care about the education of kids in this school. They do not want to communicate with the parents nor do they want to listen to the parents point of view. Instead Mr. Termin tells the parents how to raise their kids. And he's only been at the school a couple of weeks. When talking to him it's like talking in circles. He just doesn't want to listen. He tells you he's been in the district for 25 years and it's his way or no way. Oh, don't just try and go to the school to talk to either one. The secretaries won't let you in the building and they tell you they are not available to see you. They also need to learn how to handle the stress. There have been occasions when they've left me in the office and Nichole (secretary) is crying. If you want a good education and people who care about your kids don't send them to Swatara Middle School. This is not only my opinion. I've talked with several parents and administration at other schools in the district and they all have the same opinion. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
