Mahanay Elementary

Summary:

Mahanay Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 618 students in grades PK-4. The school is part of the Alief Independent School District, which has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite serving a diverse student population with a high percentage of students from low-income families, Mahanay Elementary has shown strong academic performance in recent years. The school's statewide ranking has improved, and its students consistently outperform their peers in the district and state, particularly in reading. Mahanay's performance is especially strong for African American and English Language Learner (ELL) students, who rank in the top quartile of Texas elementary schools in these subgroups. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools may contribute to its success.

While nearby charter schools, such as Alief Montessori Community School and Sst Advancement, have generally higher academic performance on STAAR tests, Mahanay Elementary's performance is still commendable, especially considering its higher percentage of students from low-income families and the Alief ISD's overall lower ranking compared to the charter schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I think the teachers are to quick to accuse children and send them to the office. When they go to the office it is all day and they have to repeat the same work over and over again. This school does not participate in field trips. Have 1 family function year. They do not participate in parties but 2 a year. Can not bring cupcakes for a childs birthday. Suggest that your child needs medicine. PTO money goes to teacher bonuses. They do not teach cursive. They spend the whole year studying for the task test and learning the answers before they can read the question. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
