Caldwell Elementary

Summary:

Caldwell Elementary is a public elementary school in McKinney, Texas, serving 458 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the McKinney Independent School District, which is ranked 237 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating.

Caldwell Elementary stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (57.64%) compared to surrounding schools, which range from 11.09% to 48.22% Hispanic. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 62.86% to 67.9% over the past three years, higher than the surrounding schools. However, Caldwell Elementary's student performance on STAAR tests is generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in reading and mathematics. For example, in 2023-2024, the percentage of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in STAAR Reading was 47.06% at Caldwell, compared to 57.73% for the district and 48.85% for the state.

Caldwell Elementary's performance on STAAR tests varies significantly among different student subgroups, with White students generally performing better than African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the past several years, from 1 star out of 5 in 2014-2015 to 4 stars out of 5 in the most recent year. When compared to nearby schools in the same district, Caldwell Elementary generally performs worse on STAAR tests, particularly in reading and mathematics. The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance, and there may be opportunities for the school to implement targeted interventions and support to help all students succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Caldwell is a great school and the only dual language campus in McKinney! Our children have the opportunity for greater success in all aspects of life as they learn everything in Spanish and English beginning in Kinder.
We have terrific teachers and great parents too! Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter is a 2nd grader in Caldwell Elementary's two-way dual language program, and I'm consistently impressed with her language abilities. The teachers care, and the school's administration is strong. I highly recommend this school for its dedication to the students and bilingualism. It's such a joy to hear my daughter speak in a foreign language. She's receiving an elite education at a public school. Don't look at test scores alone. They don't reflect what is happening at Caldwell. The children are learning their primary subjects, but also Spanish/English at a critical point for language acquisition. Good for McKinney ISD for offering this amazing, innovative program. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
